Description
Over het boekSince the 1970s, cities are changing from centers of production to centers of consumption. The question is how to manage and respond to this new view at and function of a city. All over the world we see how in the latest decades industrial areas, former harbours, old-fashioned office buildings and other premises - strongly connected with the industrial and productive function of cities and urban regions - are reconstructed and filled up with apartments, lofts, condominiums and houses. This is thought to be the domain of the creative class. But is this true Does the creative class exist and if so, who belongs to it Can we actually speak of a 39;39;class39;39;, suggesting it is a rather homogeneous group Is the creative class a new phenomenon or has it always been prominently present in cities Does the creative class really prefer to live in cities Does the growth of the creative class go at the expense of groups that are less able to meet the demands of the knowledge society Do we need policies to attract the creative class or would such policies only work counterproductive These are the questions where the authors, stemming from the University of Amsterdam and from the Humboldt University Berlin, focus on in this volume, with special emphasis on creativity and diversity. The examples they present in their contributions are from divers places like Amsterdam, Berlin, New York and Budapest.Over de auteursLon Deben is a sociologist at the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at the University of Amsterdam.
